Color Ebook Reader Reviews
One More Step Forward to the Future of Book Reading

With several black and white ebook readers, the stage is now set for a color ebook reader. And that’s exactly what several electronics companies, especially those in the ebook business, as well as several other companies, are veering towards.

And now, some companies have opened up the world to colored e-readers with breakthrough reading devices that threaten the very existence of even the best grayscale e-readers.

Some popular ebook reader providers have already let out word about future color ebook readers. Amazon officials say that a there is a potential for a colored Kindle, but this may not be realized until many more years. iRex, on the other hand, has plans to release a colored reader anytime within the next couple of years.

While these companies are still gathering fuel, the market is so far ruled by three companies. Here are the breakthroughs you should be looking for as of now.

1. Fujitsu Flepia – Colored E-Reading at a Price

Fujitsu is one of the companies that challenged the current world of monochrome ebook readers with its colored creation. Fujitsu’s color e-book reader is called the Flepia, which is now available in the market. Despite the lack of competition, the Flepia faces one huge detractor: its own price. The Fujitsu Flepia is priced at a whopping $1000, way over the price of the Kindle. Fortunately, the price also gives you quite a lot in exchange.

The Flepia comes with an 8-inch XGA screen with 260K colors and a resolution of 1024 x 768. It is also powered with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and equipped with a mini USB port. Fujitsu also holds nothing back and adds a touch screen supported by an on-screen keyboard.

A Flepia on full charge can be used for 40 hours straight, which is equivalent to about 2400 page turns. The device holds its memory via an SD card slot. You can put in any number of ebooks depending on the SD card you use.

Best of all, aside from being a digital book reader, the Flepia also offers support for e-mail, web browsing, and spreadsheets.

2. Barnes and Noble Nook – The Kindle Killer

Dubbed as the killer of the Kindle, the Nook is a special color ebook reader offered by world-famous bookstore Barnes and Noble. The Nook is currently positioned as the most advanced ebook reader in the world. Using an Android operating system and the same E-ink display technology from Vizplex, the color e-reader offers you the chance to enjoy your favourite books anytime, anywhere, and in color.

The color ebook reader measures 7.7 x 4.9 x 0.5 and weighs around 11.2 ounces. It boasts of a color touch screen supported by one-touch controls. Books are shown in full color covers, through which you can simply swipe for browsing. The Nook also comes with built-in WiFi plus 3G connectivity from AT&T.

The Nook also offers several extras not found in the Kindle. It has a microSD slot so you can expand the memory, plus an MP3 player, built-in speakers, headphone jack, and a micro USB slot. It also has the special LendMe feature, which means users can lend books from other sources for a certain period of time.

3. Qualcomm Mirasol – The Display Master

Qualcomm is known as a developer of electronics display technologies, but it has recently announced the production of a color ebook reader using its own full-color display technology. The XGA display is rendered brightly and beautifully by the 5.7-inch screen with a 1024 x768 resolution.

The display can be viewed effortlessly even under direct sunlight. Its full color also does not limit battery life, which initial tests have proven to be exceptional, although battery drains faster when you view videos a lot with the Mirasol’s video playback capability.

Although the Mirasol is not out for sale yet, the device has been finalized and the color ebook reader is set for a release anytime soon. It is believed to be a highly advanced full color ereader given that Qualcomm is a display technology expert, though the overall reading experience and performance of the Mirasol still remains a mystery and will stay that way until consumers are able to test run it upon its release.

Final Words

The color ebook reader market has not yet reached its peak, so several other color editions are expected to join the market in a few years’ time. But the future of ebook reading is veered towards this direction, and it does not hurt to be one of the few who owns the first few color e book readers in the market.
