Sony PRS-505 Review
The Time-Tested Classic from Sony

The Sony PRS-505 is the classic Sony Reader model that played a big role in the success of Sony’s ebook reader line. The e book reader was released in 2007 as an upgrade for the Sony PRS-500.

What started out as an upgrade, however, soon became one of Sony’s biggest achievements in the digital reading world, especially during its heyday. That’s also probably why even as Sony comes out with newer models, the Sony PRS-505 still retains some level of its former popularity.

So what exactly made the PRS-505 such a beloved upgrade?

Portability – Take Your Books Everywhere

One of the best things about the Sony PRS-505 is its portability. The PRS-505 became an important upgrade because it made the popular PRS-500 even more portable than it already was to begin with. First, the 505 was trimmed down to 8 mm compared to its predecessor’s 13 mm.

The unit is also made light and handy; it weighs only 9 ounces, nowhere near the weight of up to hundreds of ebooks that one unit of the PRS-505 is equivalent to.

Aside from the physical portability of the Sony PRS-505, it is also portable in terms of memory. The device now has 256 MB of memory compared to the 64 MB of the 500 model. The memory capacity, however, can be expanded to up to 8 GB if you use the Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo, 2 GB with SD cards, and up to 32 GB with SDHC cards.

This means you can bring more books with you everywhere. And to make sure you get to enjoy as many books as possible, the PRS-505 comes with a lithium-ion battery that can last up to 6800 page turns.

Readability – Read Your Books Everywhere

Despite the decrease in bulk, the Sony PRS-505 was able to retain the portable but comfortable readability of its predecessor by retaining the 6-inch screen. The screen also uses the same E-ink display technology. But as a bonus, the 505 used an enhanced version of the E-ink Vizplex imaging film.

What this ultimately brought to users was a screen that worked with faster refresh time and a brighter white. It also came with 8 different levels of grayscale and a screen resolution of 170 dpi with 600 x 800 pixels. You can also choose from 6 pt. and 7 pt. fonts so you can read at your most comfortable font size. Best of all, the device offers a high-contrast resolution that can offer an excellent view even with an almost 180-degree viewing angle.

Accessibility – Get Your Books Everywhere

The Sony CONNECT ebook store is the primary provider of seamless access to a large collection of ebooks for all PRS-505 users. The Sony CONNECT library allows users to browse through the collection of books ranging from the newest releases to the classics and to the most popular bestsellers.

After browsing, they can buy the books they are interested in through their PRS-505. Some websites offering ebooks also work with the unit. This means you have plenty of sources for the content you can enjoy with your PRS-505 from Sony.

The Future of the PRS-505

Although the PRS-505 from Sony is an old model, it still has a lot of loyal users. Users can avail of updates that Sony releases for users of this popular e-reader to keep their device up-to-date even as the world of digital book readers advance. This gives them all the more reasons to stick to their PRS-505.
